16.10.24 - The theme of 2024: "Getting rights right"

The largest event on international cooperation with African countries this year focuses on the important question: “How do we get rights right?”. What does this theme entail and why is it important to discuss this?

When Africa is discussed in the Netherlands, it is often doom and gloom. Africans are often talked about and not with. That has to change!

Human rights are at stake all over the world due to war, shrinking civil space, unfair production chains, climate change, discrimination and a growing gap between rich and poor. In African countries, many initiatives are fighting for human rights, but at the same time there are also regimes that point to human rights as a mechanism for Western neo-colonialism.

How do we do justice to the initiatives in the countries that stand up for democratization and human rights? How can Dutch organizations and activists support existing movements without a Western finger of instruction? This “Getting Rights Right” edition of Africa Day will focus on local solutions and listen to Africans who are fighting for a more inclusive, just Africa.
